Before 1971, Korea had relied entirely on imports from Japan for its stainless steel needs.
To resolve this situation and localize the stainless steel manufacturing technology, Samyang Special Steel Co, established in 1966, constructed stainless steel cold rolling plant with the annual processing capacity of 24,000 tons in 1971. In 1974, Sammi Co. was selected as an end user of special steel by government and changed its name to KISO after merger between Samyang Special Steel Co. and Korea Special Steel Co. In 1977.
KISCO spent 87 billion won and constructed integrated plant in Changwon, which had annual processing capacity of 250,000 tons, including 75,000 tons of stainless steel sheets, 150,000 tons of steel rods and wires 25,000 tons of extruded materials.
These products has been used as core material in nation’s basic industries, including automotive, precision machinery, heavy chemical industry, defense industry, etc. Coming into 1980, stainless steel industry had grown dramatically due to increasing demand for automotive, shipbuilding and construction services.
